You may know that fresh fruits and vegetables have the best nutritional value and flavor. Here's a guide to the fruits and veggies that are in season now and what to check for when you buy.
Fruits
Apples - Good ones have nice color and are firm to the touch.
Oranges - Firm. Skin that isn't too rough.
Pears - Gives in to gentle pressure by the stem.
Pineapples - Golden yellow and slightly soft. Ripe when it's easy to remove the leaf.
Tangelos - Orange or yellow. Loose skin.
Vegetables
Artichokes - Green color. Heavy for its size.
Asparagus - Closed buds. Straight, tender, deep green stalks.
Beans (green or wax) - Crisp, long, straight.
Beans (lima) - Firm, round, deep red with a smooth skin.
Broccoli - Firm closed deep-green florets. Firm tender stalks.
