TAKE A DEEP BREATH
Now, sitting up tall with your hips and shoulders back, head over your shoulders and looking out at the horizon,
TAKE ANOTHER DEEP BREATH.
Research proves that maintaining a normal healthy posture improves respiration, oxygenation and sympathetic function.
They state that,
“Homeostasis of autonomic function (tissues, organs, organ systems) is intimately related with posture such that when postural efficiency is optimized, not only is breathing also optimized, but other visceral and somatic functions are also seen to improve.”
So on the other hand, inefficient posture and breathing habits lead to poor health status, and eventually pathological dysfunction.
Your vestibular system is the primary control unit for postural adaptations. Your neck musculature is a very close second. Both of these factors weigh heavily into autonomic control centers within your brainstem.
How does chiropractic play into this? I’m glad you asked!
Postural abnormalities are a distinguishing factor in the vertebral subluxation complex. Subluxations have been linked to abnormal sensory input from the vestibular system and the neck musculature, which in turn promotes neuroplastic changes in the brainstem centers. These types of neuroplastic changes are detrimental to health. Neuroplasticity is simply habits and functions within the body that have been engrained through neurological repetition. An example of this is the level of difficulty and time it would take to lower the blood pressure of an individual who has had high blood pressure for 15 years vs. someone who has had high blood pressure for only 1 year.
CHIROPRACTIC ADJUSTMENTS have been shown through various studies to positively modulate postural distortions, sensorimotor integration and cardiorespiratory function!
