SHOULD YOU GET THE FLU SHOT?
Fellow neighbors, we are in prime season for flu shots in the United States, so dont be surprised if you see them being promoted everywhere from your medical doctors office to your local grocery or corner store.
Many of my patients ask me, Doc, should I/or my family get the flu shot this year? I respond, Why do you think you should get the flu shot? The most common answer I hear is because a health agency recommended the vaccine for everyone, young and old. Yet, many people are not aware of the true facts behind flu shots; and their potential ineffectiveness, side effects, and harmful additives.
Yes, there is positive data about flu shots, but there is also significant amount of data from both mainstream medical journals and alternative media sources that question flu shots usefulness and efficacy. For example:
If you log onto the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website and do some hard searching you will find that in 2005 1,806 people died from influenza in the USA, not the 36,000 that is usually reported. In 2004, there were just 1,100 flu deaths. Yet, the number of people that died in hospitals each year from preventable, in hospital medical errors in 2000 to 2002 was 195,000. This questions where we put our focus and energy in terms of healthcare.
Knowing the facts will help you decide if you need the flu shot. I have never received a flu shot, and Im around all ages of patients every day and have never missed a day of practice due to sickness. You will hear the yearly fall warnings about this years upcoming flu season, and all the flu deaths that will follow. The media would have you believe that getting the flu shot is all you need to do to stay healthy all winter. Let me tell you that a flu shot will not make you healthier. It may shock you that less than 40 percent of health care workers got the flu shot in 2011. Your lifestyle strategies will dictate the majority of your health and how strong your immune system is to fight off pathogens that you are exposed to.
Here are some strategies I use to prevent the flu without getting a flu shot:
I teach patients that you dont get sick you do sick. So this flu season implement these strategies and you will find out for yourself that if you take care of your body it will take care of you.
