Summer Means Sun DANGER!!

Enjoy the warm Austin, Texas days, but protect yourself and your family from the danger of skin cancer. In as little as 15 minutes, your skin can be damaged by the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Clouds or cool temperatures don't reduce the threat. Always head outdoors prepared to protect against the sun.

Who's at risk? All of us!

Skin cancer can strike anyone, but some are at higher risk. Persons with:

  • Lighter skin color.

  • A personal or family history of skin cancer.

  • Exposure to sun at work or play.

  • A history of sunburns early in life.

  • Freckles, skin that reddens or burns easily or skin that becomes painful in the sun.

  • Blue or green eyes. Blond or red hair.

Protect Yourself
Remember, UV rays can damage skin anytime of the year! Cloudy or cool. Midday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., UV rays are the strongest. They reflect off water, cement, sand and snow.
Protect yourself:

  • Stay in the shade.

  • Cover exposed skin and wear a hat.

  • Use sunglasses.

  • Use a broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Apply it liberally and often.

  • Never use tanning beds or sunlamps. Their UV rays are dangerous too.

Have fun in the sun, but be smart. Recognize the danger and use protection.
