March is National Nutrition Month!
/>
It's no secret that childhood obesity is a cause close to First Lady Michelle Obama's heart, but did you know that she also spearheaded the effort to help all Americans adopt healthy eating habits?
For 20 years, the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) food pyramid charted what Americans should eat to maintain a healthy diet. However, nutrition experts have said that the pyramid was complicated and gave the wrong idea about certain foods. For example, on the pyramid food chart all fats were lumped into one category - a bad one.
The new model for healthy eating is called MyPlate, and it has four colored sections representing fruits, vegetables, grains and proteins. Next to the plate is a smaller circle representing dairy products (meaning it's optional, but not necessary). Vegetables are one of the largest food groups now
On MyPlate's website the USDA emphasizes several important nutrition messages: eat smaller portions, make at least half the plate fruits and vegetables and avoid sugary drinks. We have been promoting these strategies for years! Now it is becoming more "mainstream."
