A NEW YEAR, A NEW RESOLUTION
I hope everyone had a great holiday season. It is always great to spent time with loved ones and create memories together. My wife and I spent Christmas in Minneapolis with our families. There was plenty of snow and single digit highs during the day. It was good to visit, but great to come back. After a week of rest and getting recharged I am excited to see everyone next week. I spent the week reviewing the past year and what I want to accomplish in 2011. I set goals in all areas of my life (personal and professional) and wrote them down. I would like all of you to do the same with some advice listed below to ensure you have a fulfilling and productive year .
It happens every year at this time. I hear my patients telling me what their New Year's Resolution is going to be. I can write the most popular top tenand they are the same every year. But the number one New Year's Resolution I hear every year is that people want better health. If it's from to feeling better, losing weight, quit smoking, to running a marathon.
When you sit down to write your New Year's resolution for 2011 you might realize that you carried them over from the year before. And the year before that. And the year before that. Big goals that you just can't seem to get done, but don't want to give up on either because they are important to you.
This year I want to help you achieve those health goals. Here are four tips to setting appropriate New Year's resolutions:
1. Write it down. If you don't write it down it doesn't count. Choose to write your goals as "I am" statements. You can even include your feelings of gratitude by stating your goals as "I am grateful for ..."
1. Break It Down. Whatever your goal is, you have to have a plan. Break it down into "mile markers." Reward yourself when you get to those "mile markers" and have a huge reward when successfully reach the goal. But, you must disciple or punish yourself when you don't hit those "mile markers".
2. Make it a Priority. If your New Year's Resolution is a priority to you then it will get done. If it's not a priority then you are setting yourself up for failure. Once you have your resolution set, it's time to make room for it in your life. This means that you might have to re-arrange your schedule. If you can't make it fit in your schedule then it might not be a realistic resolution.
3. Get Others Involved. Involving family and friends in your resolutions is an excellent way to ensure you accomplish your goal. A support network can help you make room in your schedule by taking over tasks.
Assemble a team of people to support you and cheer you on. Accountability is a huge motivator. By letting even one person in on your goal, you create accountability. Even better, getting someone to share the same resolution with you is a fun way to improve your chances of keeping your resolution.
In our clinic we have a plaque with the Chinese proverb, "the journey of 1,000 miles begins with one step." Having the end in mind is great. But to get there you have to make the first move. By next New Year's Eve, you can look back at this year's resolutions and be very proud and grateful, which is a lot more fun than recommitting to the old ones!
HAVE A HAPPY, SAFE, AND HEALTHY 2011!!
