Everyone's spine is an important body part that has a big effect on the rest of their health and well-being. Many people develop scoliosis, and this can cause a number of other problems for those patients. The condition can cause pain and can embarrass those who have it. Children usually develop it at a specific stage of their growth, and it often requires seeing a chiropractor to get chiropractic care. If you think that your child might have this condition, or they have other back pain, call Four Points Family Chiropractic in Austin, TX, to make an appointment with the chiropractor.

What Is Scoliosis?

This condition is when the spine curves sideways. It usually starts in children when they have a big growth spurt just before they begin puberty. As time goes on, the condition can get worse. Many cases are simply mild, some are more moderate, and others are severe and can cause terrible health problems. A case of scoliosis may start out mild and then progress until it becomes either moderate or severe.

When a child has a severe case of scoliosis, it may be disabling. The curve of the spine can cause the chest cavity to have less space, which can cause breathing problems because there isn't enough room for the lungs. When the rib cage puts pressure on the heart and lungs, it can result in serious heart problems that force the heart to work harder to pump blood. The condition can also cause a lot of back pain in patients.

Scoliosis Causes

For the majority of cases, the cause is never known, and there's no family history of it. However, in some patients, the cause is genetic, and the condition can run in these families. There are various types of scoliosis, and in some rare ones may be caused by the patient having a neuromuscular condition. These may include birth defects of the spine, spinal injuries, birth defects in various other bones, and cerebral palsy.

It is more common to have scoliosis when there is a family history of it. It typically begins just before puberty starts and can continue causing problems for the duration of adolescence. Among adolescents, about 3% have it. The numbers of cases are even between girls and boys. Severe cases that require chiropractic care occur much more often in patients who are girls.
